by After meeting Leah Hinton a few years back when we volunteered for an event. When asked, there was no way I’d turn down an opportunity to hear her perform when she came to NYC. The beginning of this month Leah, who lives in Boston, came down to NY for two shows. One at The Shrine and another at Silvana’s.
Leah Hinton, singer/songwriter, musician, entertainer and Berklee College of Music graduate. Her EP entitled SonKissed is Jazz influenced music with Neo-Soul vibes and a positive message about love and life. She has been singing around Boston and New York and writing and recording new music. She has great things in store for her in the near future and much music to share with the world.
Originating from Henderson, North Carolina, she grew up singing in school, church and choirs including the Raleigh Girls Choir of Raleigh, NC. Taking singing and piano lessons grew her love for music. She always had a fondness of jazz music also, as her father would play jazz music which increased her interest for jazz. Studying music has allowed her to perform in recitals, concerts and festivals such as the Mozart Music Festival with The Capital City Girl’s Choir in Vienna, Austria and also studying abroad and performing in Valencia, Spain. Leah also enjoys being involved in and performing in community events as she gives back. It is very important to her to help others.
She gets much of her inspiration from influences such as Jesus Christ, her parents, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Dianne Reeves, Sammy Davis Jr., Sade, Anita O’day, India Arie, Erykah Badu, Adele, Diana Ross, Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Mary Mary, Robin Thicke, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Esperanza Spalding, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, Nancy Wilson, Ledisi, Sounds of Blackness, Take 6, Gretchen Parlato, and Quincy Jones just to name a few.
I was able to watch Leah Hinton perform live, March 2nd at the Shrine in Harlem, NY. I’m a person who loves live music and a good sound. I can tell you now, that Leah is someone you’d want to hear. She had such a soulful sound.
Hinton’s band complimented her well. Never overshadowing or overpowering her sultry voice. It was a such a great blend. The band included; drummer, Jordan Carter. Key Bass, Keytar, and Melodica player Deshawn Alexander. Lastly, pianist and trumpet player, Caleb Hensinger.
Leah sang original music off of her EP. Songs included, Loves Cry, Easy to Love, and SonKissed. Which showcased not only her voice, but her writing skills as well. She also did a cover of Stevie Wonders’ Superstitious.
I for one, absolutely loved Leah’s voice and her energy while on stage. It was almost effortless. Her range was incredible, hitting high notes and going back down to low.
